From Saturday 13 February 2010, weather permitting, there will be a major change to traffic conditions at the Kings Avenue Overpass construction site (Russell roundabout). The existing circular roundabout will be significantly altered with traffic movements extended down Parkes Way. The city side extension is the first of two stages in the elongation of the roundabout with the second stage, an extension to the Airport side of the roundabout up Morshead Drive, expected to be implemented in around six weeks time. The extended traffic arrangement on the city side of the intersection will allow for a single dedicated right-hand turn and two dedicated through-lanes to the airport. Safety measures will be put in place including a 40km/ph speed limit 24 a day, hours 7 days a week. There will also be advisory signage and variable message boards. These temporary changes will be in place until the end of 2010. Motorists are warned to expect traffic delays, especially during peak hours, when passing through the altered Russell roundabout. Drivers are strongly encouraged to plan alternate routes, take public transport and allow additional time when travelling to the airport. National Capital Authority Chief Executive Gary Rake urged Canberra drivers to show patience. “The National Capital Authority understands the inconvenience to the public resulting from this work and appreciates the patience being shown by the Canberra community. “If you can, try to avoid the roundabout and use alternate routes such as Commonwealth Avenue Bridge and Northcott Drive. “This project addresses one of the worst traffic bottle necks and black spots in Canberra. Once complete, the overpass will result in safety improvements and reduced travel times.” he said. |
