Home Authority Media Centre 2010 Media Releases High Blue-Green Algae Alert for Lake Burley Griffin

High Blue-Green Algae Alert for Lake Burley Griffin Print E-mail

The National Capital Authority (NCA) has issued a High Alert Level for blue-green algae in Yarralumla Beach and Weston Park East in Lake Burley Griffin.

At present, the blue-green algae levels in this water are at the High Alert Level. As exposure to this level of blue-green algae carries an increased risk of adverse health effects, the water is closed to primary-contact recreation.

Primary-contact recreation means recreation that involves whole-body water contact or submersion of the head. Examples include swimming, diving, waterskiing and windsurfing.

Secondary-contact recreation (such as rowing, fishing, boating and canoeing) will still be permitted. However, individuals participating in such activities should avoid water contact as much as possible and shower after water contact. Clothing that has been in the water should also be washed to remove any blue-green algae residue.

Symptoms of blue-green algae exposure may include skin, mucosa and eye irritation, flu-like symptoms, hay fever-like symptoms and gastrointestinal illness.

Water event organisers should ensure that there are adequate showering facilities and that all participants are aware of the blue-green algae alert level and the associated exposure risks.

Pet owners should not allow their animals to swim in or drink the water, as blue-green algae can make pets very ill or even result in death.

Algae levels can change quickly depending on the weather and water nutrient levels. Water users should look for algae warnings signs at major water entry points to see the current algae alert level.
